The Old Man and the Sea is a masterpiece novel written by Hemingway. Santiago is the central character of the novel. He is considered a_______. We see that he is without any fish for the last eighty-four days, but he is still determined because he is ______ and has a strong belief in himself. He says that “My big fish must be somewhere in the sea” He also says that “I know many tricks and I have resolution.”

Santiago is ______. When he fails to catch any fish for the last eighty-four days, other fishermen call him unlucky. But he doesn’t care what others think about him and he decides to try his luck on the eighty-fifth day. This thing shows that he is . Then his fight with Marlin for three days and nights and the trick with which he kills marlin shows that he is _______. During his whole adventure with Marlin, the boy Manolin, his favorite player Joe DiMaggio and his dreams of Lions provide him spiritual strength and he feels himself stronger.

‘The Old Man and the Sea’ is one of the greatest novels of Hemingway. This novel won Hemingway Noble Prize in 1954. Santiago is the central character of the Novel. Manolin is the disciple of Santiago and he has a great love for the old man and considers him a great fisherman. He says that.

“There are many good fishermen and some great ones. But there is only you.”

Manolin is a symbol of Santiago’s lost youth. Despite his parents stopping him from going to old man, Manolin visits every night to his hut and brings him supper, cola, and a bottle of bears. They have developed a great love for each other. Their relation is like father-son relation. During his adventure old man repeatedly says that

“I wish, the boy were here”.

Santiago tries to summon up his courage by remembering the boy. There are almost seven different occasions in the novel when the Old Man remembers the boy.


On the other hand, the boy too loves him and visits his hut when he does not return for three days. On the next day, when he visits him and finds that the old man is badly injured, he weeps and brings him coffee. Manolin consoles him and also says that he will go with him for the campaign and the old man becomes happy.

To conclude our discussion, we can say that the character of Manolin is a source of
strength for the old man and their relationship is no less than a father-son relationship.

The story revolves around the character of an Old man, named Santiago and his hooking the great Marlin. His dreams/ memories of_______ are most important in this regard. To cut the matter short, it can be stated that the dreams/ memories of are very important for Santiago. It/They help him in the time of great trial and give him power, vigor, and strength to fight with brave heart and enthusiasm. So, we can say that the ـــــــــــــplay a significant role in his life.

1. Dreams of Lions

His dreams of lions have great importance in his hooking and killing the Marlin. He dreams
about lions three timesin the novel i.e., beginning, middle, and end. We see that at the beginning
of the novel he dreams of lions. Once, in his youth, he has been in African. On the beach, he saw
lions there. Lions are the symbol of strength and power. So, the dreams of lions are the source
of power for him. During his fight with Marlin, when Marlin tires him and he rests on the boat,
he again dreams of lions. When he wakes, he feels more strong. In the end, when he is badly
injured after his three-day fight with Marlin and taking rest, he again dreams of lions.

2. Joe DiMaggio

His old memories of DiMaggio have great importance in his hooking and killing the big Marlin. At the beginning of the novel, we come to know that he is a big fan of Joe DiMaggio. DiMaggio is a great baseball player and a source of strength for him. When his hand cramps while fighting with Marlin, he remembers that DiMaggio is also handicapped. Remembering this incident, he collects his falling spirits and becomes ready to fight with the fish. He also likes DiMaggio because he was the son of a fisherman. Like Santiago, he was also an expert in his craft/field. The Old man desires to see his favorite player fishing with him in the ocean. When Manolin remarks that there are other men on the New York team, the Old Man remarks, “Naturally, but he makes the difference”.

3. Hand-Match competition with Negro

His old memories of his hand match with Negro have great importance in his hooking and killing the big Marlin. When he is tired of fighting with Marlin, he remembers the historic hand match competition with the Negro. He was a strong person. The competition continued for twenty-four hours. The old man defeated the Negro and won the competition. Remembering this incident, he collects his falling spirits and becomes ready to fight with the fish.

4. Manolin

Manolin is the disciple of Santiago and he has a great love for the old man and considers
him a great fisherman. He says that. “There are many good fishermen and some great ones. But
there is only you”. Manolin is a symbol of Santiago’s lost youth. When he feels helpless during
his fight with Marlin, the old man repeatedly says that “I wish, the boy was here”. Santiago tries
to summon up his courage by remembering the boy. There are almost seven different occasions

The Novel, ‘The Old man and the Sea’ is one the most beautiful novels of the 20th century. This novel is famous for its great characters, especially, Santiago and Marlin. Santiago is the main character of the novel. Marlin is the second great character of this novel. The whole story moves around his hooking and killing the great Marlin.

The Marlin is a big fish of 18 feet. On the eighty-fifth day, when he is rowing the boat, he feels movement in one of the rows. He at once understands that something big is caught in his row. It was a big Marlin. His movement gives him a cut below his eyes and in his hand. But the old man is not upset. He says,

“Fish, I shall stay with you until I am dead”.

The old man spends three days with Marlin. He is a very big and powerful fish. He calls him male and desires to see him. Marlin makes him much tired. But the old man does not lose heart. He says that

“Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated”.

On the third day, he is very tired. Then he sees the tail of the Marlin out of water. He starts moving/ revolving around him. In the ninth circle, he brings his harpoon and puts it into his chest. He falls with a crash. He is successful in catching the big fish after a lot of struggle.

n the end, we can say that the character of Marlin is a great one. Although the old man kills the big fish, the headache which the Marlin gives Santiago shows the strength and vigor of Marlin.

Question.5 Encounter with Sharks/ Great Challenge

‘The Old Man and the Sea’ is one of the greatest novels of Hemingway. This novel won Hemingway Noble Prize in 1954. Santiago is the central character of the Novel. He catches the big Marlin after a three-day struggle. But he remains unsuccessful to bring Marlin at the cost because of the attack of Sharks. Sharks attack Marlin and eat the whole flesh. When the old man reaches the cost, only the skeleton of the Marlin is left.


After killing the Marlin, he has to face another great challenge in the form of the Sharks. First of all, a Mako shark attacks and eats the main flesh of the Marlin. The old man kills him but it takes the harpoon with it before falling into the sea. After some time two more sharks appear and start eating the flesh of Marlin. The old man fights with them and drives the knife in the eye of one shark and the spinal cord of the other.


After some time, the sharks come in a pack and attack the big fish. He strikes them on their head with his club. But one of the sharks takes his club too before falling down. The man tires too much and sits down letting the sharks with Marlin. There is left nothing. The old man returns empty-handed.


In the end, it can be said that his fight with sharks was a greater challenge than his fight
with Marlin. Because he is an experienced fisherman and he can catch any fish with his tricks. But
this kind of thing is new for him. And we also see that he is already tired much. In this situation,
fighting with sharks is a great challenge.
